During the second half of the 19th century the vineyards of Europe were attacked by three pests of American origin against which vitis europea had no defences and thus sustained considerable damage before remedies were found to combat them, which was only done at great economic sacrifice and, for the first time, with the invaluable help of science.
Juan Piqueras Haba (Campo Arcís, Valencia, 1946) is Professor of Geography at the University of Valencia. Son and grandson of viticulturists, he has devoted part of his work to research into the wine sector in Valencia. His doctoral thesis was published in 1981 under the title La vid y el vino en el País Valenciano. This was followed by other books: La agricultura de exportación valenciana y su formación histórica (1985), La vitivinicultura valenciana ante la CEE y el mercado mundial (1985), Historia y guía de los vinos valencianos (1986) and El legado de Baco: los vinos valencianos (2000).
